SYNOPSIS
Break Back (currently in production) explores how the Palisades and Altadena tennis communities came together in the aftermath of devastating wildfires. Featuring voices from tennis legends like Pam Shriver, USTA SoCal leaders, Tristan Boyer, Steve Bellamy, and the team at Palisades Tennis Center, the film shines a light on resilience, community, and the unifying and healing power of sport.
Directed, shot, and produced by Lina Larson, Break Back captures personal stories, on-court moments, and charitable initiatives, showing how tennis became a catalyst for connection, support, and hope. From personal stories of loss to non-profit work, the documentary celebrates a community that refused to be broken, proving that even after the fire, a fighting spirit and solidarity endure.
WHY MAKE THIS FILM
Lina, who worked for PTC from 2023 to 2025, was deeply inspired by her connection to the community. After witnessing dozens of her former clients lose everything in the fires, she saw firsthand how tennis offered a sense of normalcy, a therapeutic outlet, and even a momentary escape from the nightmare.
Through this experience, Lina also came to understand the vital importance of public recreation spaces and the profound impact individuals can have in supporting their communities. Break Back shines a light on the people working tirelessly to bring tennis and hope back to the Palisades.
